Three-time YONEX All England Open champion Tai Tzu-Ying saw her glittering career come to an end at the group stages of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The Chinese Taipei shuttler was the victor in Birmingham in 2017, 2018 and 2020 going on to win women’s singles Olympic silver in Tokyo three years ago.

Previously the World No.1 for a total of 214 weeks, the third seed in Paris lost out to Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand to miss out on a place in the knockout stages.

2024 women’s singles champion Carolina Marin made it through comfortably as did top seed and 2023 winner An Se Young of South Korea who received a bye in the round of 16.

She is one of two champions at this year’s All England to still be involved in the French capital with back-to-back mixed doubles winners Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong beating out their compatriots and the second seeds Huang Dong Ping and Yan Zhe Feng in the quarterfinals.

Two-time All England winners Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino of Japan have advanced as they look to upgrade their bronze medal from Tokyo.

Women’s doubles champions Baek Ha Na and Lee So Hee lost out to the pair who sit just below them in the seedings, Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning of China in straight games.

Former champions Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida of Japan have made it through to the semi-finals with a composed win over Maiken Fruergaard and Sara Thygesen of Denmark.

The men’s double semi-finals have been set and the two-time All England winners Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto are not amongst them after losing in the quarterfinals to top seeds Liang Weiking and Wang Chang of China.

This year’s runners-up Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik came from behind to beat the third seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty of India to reach the semi-finals where they will face Liang and Wang.

In the other semi-final will be Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark and Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin of Chinese Taipei.

Reigning men’s singles champion Jonatan Christie failed to progress out of the group stages as semi-finalist Lakshya Sen of India beat the Indonesian to take the sole qualifying spot in Group L.

Home hope Toma Junior Popov also caused a shock as he beat this year’s losing finalist Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia to advance before losing to 2021 champion Lee Zii Jia.

World number two and two-time champion Viktor Axelsen made it safely through to the knockout stages as did his fellow Dane Anders Antonsen.

The action concludes in Paris on 5 August.
